Anne Montgomery, RSCJ, was an incredible symbol of peacemaking, her work extending into the 21st century until she died in 2012.

Anne started as a teacher, especially working with poor adults and children in New York City. She became involved with the Catholic Worker movement in the 1970s, doing social actions with a variety of groups to stop war, and especially the use of nuclear weapons.

She was one of the Plowshares 8, who in 1980, entered a military facility to symbolically beat military weapons with hammers into plowshares. She served a total of three years in prison for her various acts of civil disobedience which she termed "divine obedience," since she believed weapons of mass destruction should never be protected by law.

She also co-wrote a book with Art Laffin entitled Swords into Plowshares in 1987, updated in 1996. She was active in peace teams trying to stop the invasion of Iraq in 1991 and was part of fasts in 2000 to stop the sanctions against Iraq. She was also part of Christian Peacemaker Teams in a variety of places in the world.
