In the early 80's Joan taught at Holy Redeemer School in Washington, DC and was part of the community of RSCJ who lived in Sursum Corda Village. After probation in 1985, she worked with several other RSCJ at the Thensted Center in Grand Coteau, LA which provided home health care, job search assistance, financial education, and emergency housing, food, and clothing. In 1990 Joan went overseas and for eight years served in the Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and several of those years serving as a member of their Provincial Team. When she returned to the United States she began a new ministry with at-risk youth in New York city public schools. In 2015 Joan returned to Washington DC where she worked with Betsy Hartson at Living Wages, a non-profit educational program designed to help low-income men and women in SE Washington earn an external diploma (similar to a GED) in order to help them find better paying jobs.
