Kathleen’s special love of love for young children, for the poor and for simplicity of life was evident in her work in schools primarily for the poor and in Network Schools where she always supported those designing projects for the poor .

In 1982, Kathleen was part of a small group of RSCJ who began work at Holy Redeemer School and lived at the convent there.   Holy Redeemer was within walking distance of Sursum Corda Village, a low-income community where another group of RSCJ lived for over 20 years.

From 1997, Kathleen volunteered at St Aloysius School in Harlem, and was part of the 51st Street Hell’s Kitchen Community in Manhattan, with Eileen McDonnell and Ana Ospina until their move to Kenwood.  At that time she joined the 49th Street Community which was also in New York City,
