“In the early '70's, Mary Dowling (who was probably in her 70's or 80's) heroically wore a white armband in St. Louis to protest the [Vietnam War]...This was heroic because many persons with whom she dealt were very pro-war, but she clearly calmly stated her convictions, and formed a group of parents in St. Charles, MO to promote peace issues and to become politically active.” "In early 70's, she also went to as many grocery stores in St. Louis area as possible in order to promote the Cesar Chavez grape boycott. Since she did not drive, she enlisted former students and parents to accompany her on these excursions, thus expanding consciousness of the issues.” (From a Proviince-wide email spill in 2017)
