Patricia (Pat) Murphy grew up in a family that valued spirituality and attended Duchesne Academy in Omaha which often included spiritual practices. A Society general counsel called for meeting the needs of those whose needs were not often met. After earning a PhD in Pastoral Counseling, she became a chaplain at Rush University Medical Center to assist the psychiatry patients to draw on their spirituality. She also taught the psychiatric staff about the role of spirituality for those with psychiatric disorders. Her own participation in doing research has contributed to evidence based information about the way spirituality supports or harms persons with a variety of illnesses.
